How To Play League of Legends: Our Guide

In this guide, we will introduce you to the popular video game, League of Legends.

Without any doubt, League of Legends is currently one of the most popular games. It has been so for a long time since it launched in 2009. It is defined as a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), in which two teams of five battle out to be the ones to destroy other teams’ main structure, or Nexus, first. These teams are made out of a selection of champions with backstories and inter-connected lore, which was recently adapted into an animated Netflix series called Arcane.

To play League of Legends you need a computer, a keyboard, and a mouse. You can technically play with a controller, however, it would put you at a very big disadvantage as MOBA games like League of Legends require precise movement and quick reflexes. Unlike many other games on the market, the system requirements of League of Legends are very low. This makes the game accessible to many gamers with average hardware and is one of the reasons why League of Legends is so popular. Then you just need to download the game client and create a free account in order to play the game.

With a fresh account, your game mode choices are a little bit limited. You have to play against AI for a few games before you can play with real players. Your champion pool will also be limited because in League of Legends you gradually unlock champions by accumulating in-game currencies called blue essences. You can also purchase Riot Points to unlock characters and skins.

After queuing up for a game and accepting a match, you will be taken to the champion selection screen. On this screen, you will pick the champion you want to play in the game and the rune combination, or special effects that help you throughout the game, and your summoner spells. Keep in mind that there is also a banning phase in ranked game modes, followed by players picking their champions one by one to allow for more strategies and counter-strategies. You need to talk with your team while picking your champions, as League of Legends has a main strategy consisting of pre-determined roles with appropriate lanes for them. You need to pick a champion suitable for the lane you’re going to play in and the role you’re going to have in your team.

Then you will face a short loading screen in which you can examine your opponents. After that, you will spawn in your base with your team. You’ll be level 1 when you start and by completing certain objectives in the game like killing minions and opponents, you will level up to 18. Each level-up grants you a skill point that you can spend on one of your four skills. However, your ultimate skill can only be leveled upon levels 6, 12, and 18. Before leaving the base, you’ll also have to shop for certain items. You will select these items according to their attributes and whether they are suitable for your desired build or not. By completing the objectives mentioned before you’ll also earn gold, which you can spend to get more items once you come back to your base.

The main objective is to destroy the enemy team’s nexus. Before you can do that, you need to get through 3 lane turrets, an inhibitor for each lane, and then two nexus towers. There are also creatures in the area between the lanes for the jungle player to earn gold and experience. Baron Nashor and the different kinds of dragons are two other big objectives in the game, each granting different buffs to the team that kills it. The main idea is to use your skills and your items to kill enemy players and attack their buildings by cooperating with your team.

After climbing up the ranks in the competitive game mode, you need to show yourself in amateur leagues in order to become a professional League of Legends player. If you perform well enough in local leagues and tournaments, scouts will take notice and you will get offers from bigger teams from bigger leagues. Before that, you will probably be admitted into the Academy roster of a team, which competes in smaller versions of regional leagues. After that, it is up to how well you perform, whether if you advance up to the big leagues or stay in the academy league.

Apart from countless tournaments all around the world, League of Legends features regional leagues organized by the game’s developer Riot Games and also international tournaments, in which the winners of regional leagues compete. The twelve main regions which have spots in international tournaments are:

  • LCK — Korea
  • LCS — North America
  • LEC — Europe
  • LPL — China
  • PCS — Pacific Region
  • VCS — Vietnam
  • CBLOL —Brazil
  • LCO — Oceania
  • LCL — CIS
  • UL — Japan
