Preparing for a New Year of Growth

As summer winds down, families across the country are getting ready for another exciting school year. Classrooms are being prepared, school supplies are being purchased, and students are getting ready to reconnect with friends, meet new teachers, and take on new challenges.DEI in the US school system

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 54.4 million K-12 students and 5.9 million teachers are expected to return to classrooms this fall. Together, they represent a massive community of students, educators, administrators, and support staff working every day to make education possible. More than 10 million people work in the nation’s elementary and secondary schools, including teachers, principals, teaching assistants, school bus monitors, and other essential staff.

But back-to-school season is about more than new backpacks and classroom schedules. It is a time to think about what students need to succeed throughout the year.

Today’s students are entering an educational environment that continues to evolve. Technology is increasingly integrated into learning, while STEM, coding, digital creativity, entrepreneurship, and other hands-on subjects are helping students develop skills they can use well beyond the classroom.

Access to technology is also an important part of the modern educational experience. Census Bureau data tracks computer ownership and household internet access, highlighting just how closely education and technology are connected.

For schools and families, the beginning of a new academic year provides an opportunity to set goals, build positive routines, and encourage students to explore subjects that spark their curiosity. Whether a student is passionate about mathematics, science, technology, the arts, or something completely different, meaningful learning happens when students are given opportunities to discover what interests them.

Back-to-school is also a reminder that education is a community effort. Teachers, parents, school leaders, community organizations, and enrichment providers all play an important role in helping students thrive.

As millions of students head back into classrooms this year, the focus should be on more than simply getting through another school year. It should be about creating opportunities for students to learn, explore, create, and prepare for the future.
